Did you know that 15.7 million children live in poverty in the United States? One in four children in Texas live in poverty. In Dallas, 38% of our children live in poverty. In Dallas Independent School District, 87% of the students are eligible for free or reduced price lunch. Many students, however, are not fed during the weekend or on school breaks. A chronically underfed student will perform 18% worse on standardized math tests, suffer from illness more often, and attend fewer days of school than classmates who received adequate nutrition. This is where the 2014 DAYL Leadership Class is stepping in and asking for your support.

The 2014 DAYL Leadership Class is supporting the North Texas Food Bank by hosting a fundraiser for its Food 4 Kids Program. The Food 4 Kids Program seeks to prevent child hunger by providing backpacks full of non-perishable, kid-friendly food for children in Dallas area schools to take home on Friday afternoons. In 2012 the program grew to 330 schools and provided backpacks full of food each weekend during the school year to approximately 11,000 chronically hungry children in Dallas, Denton, Collin, and Rockwall counties.

Grab your bibs, sunglasses, and wet naps and come out to support the 2014 DAYL Leadership Class’s project: Crawfest: Claws for a Cause. We will have music, beverages, and the best crawfish in town! Whether you call them mudbugs, crawdads, or crawfish, we are cracking them open on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Four Corners Brewery, which is located at 423 Singleton Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75212.
