Homeless outreach is especially important this time of year as temperatures plummet. As such, the DAYL Aid to the Homeless Committee has two volunteer opportunities in January, 2018.
The first volunteer opportunity will be to volunteer with The SoupMobile on Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 10:00 a.m. – Noon. The SoupMobile is on the front lines of the war on hunger in Dallas and, with the help of its many volunteers, it serves over 200,000 meals every year. Volunteers will have a chance to make and package sandwiches and sides for distribution from SoupMobile. All volunteers are invited to meet for lunch following the event. Kids are welcome to participate in the volunteer opportunity, which will be held at Life in Deep Ellum.
The second volunteer opportunity will be to partner with Dallas Metro Alliance on Thursday, January 25, 2018 for “The Count.” In this evening event, starting at 8:00 p.m., groups of DAYL members will help conduct a census of our homeless population. This count is required under federal law for our community to receive the necessary funds to combat homelessness and it also helps experts identify and understand the extent and nature of homelessness, changing trends in this area, and the measure of our success in ending homelessness. This is an extremely rewarding experience, and it is absolutely vital for our neighbors in need.
If you are interested in helping out with either activity, email Cherie Harris. Additional information will be sent to all volunteers a couple of days before each event.
