DAYL’s annual Community Court program will be held on Saturday, September 10th from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Stewpot (1835 Young St, Dallas, TX 75201) in downtown Dallas. This is a very rewarding opportunity for DAYL volunteers to help the City’s homeless eradicate their unpaid DART tickets in exchange for community service work.
The judges of the JP courts, the Stewpot, and the DAYL work together to help the homeless with this daunting task of unpaid tickets, which is often a deterrent for the homeless to receive proper identification, find work, or find a place to live. Help the DAYL Aid to the Homeless Committee end this cycle of defeat by allowing the homeless to resolve their DART fee evasion tickets in exchange for a community service sentence that is served the same day. This also serves the JP courts by helping clear their dockets, promotes accountability among the homeless population, and provides a needed community service.
As a volunteer, you will assist these homeless individuals as they meet with the JP judges, answer any questions they have, and hopefully be mutually encouraged by their stories.
Email Michael Holmes to volunteer.
